Kindle Featured ImageIn 2010, the most popular e-book reading device was the laptop. The Kindle e-reader was in second place. Today, the most popular reading device is the tablet. The good news is, you can read virtually any e-book format on most tablet computers.

Readers can opt for a dedicated format like the Kindle Fire or the iPad Mini or a generic tablet like the Google Nexus 7 or Samsung Galaxy. Even if a reader chooses a non-proprietary tablet or e-reader, they can often download an app that will allow them to read e-books in the Kindle format. With Amazon being the most popular online e-book store, it seems to reason that converting your book into the Kindle format is essential for writers who want to reach readers.

Of course, you have three easy ways to convert a document into a format that is easy to read on any device with a Kindle format reading app.

  1. Send It To Yourself – This is by far the easiest method converting your document to the Kindle format. If you own a Kindle, you’ll have to register it through Amazon in order to buy books and download them to your device. When you register your Kindle you’ll get a dedicated e-mail address for your device. E-mail a Word document to that e-mail and your Kindle device will automatically convert it to the Kindle format. You can then share it with others, sell it on your website, or upload it to Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) so you can sell it on Amazon. This option is not available for desktop and mobile Kindle reading apps. It’s only available to Kindle device owners.
  2. KDP Publishing – Amazon has a direct publishing division for authors who are ready to publish on the Kindle. It’s called Kindle Direct Publishing. All you have to do is sign up for an account and upload your Word document into the KDP interface. You’ll have to fill out the description, tags, price, and other sales information. Once you do this your e-book will be available for sale on Amazon within 12-24 hours. If you want to sell it through other distribution channels, then you’ll have to convert it to the Kindle format by another means.
  3. Mobipocket CreatorMobipocket Creator is an e-book creation software package you can download and use to create e-books. You can import Word documents, PDF files, and other formats and convert them into Kindle e-books and PDFs. It’s easy to use and will convert your book into a format that can be read on a Kindle reading device or a Kindle reading app.

Now that you are familiar with the three ways to create a Kindle document, you can start your Kindle publishing career.
